Good Food on the Move

Posted: 30th September 2010

I've just spent the best part of the last three days driving 700 miles of the UK's roads between training events and hotels. As tiring as it was, it was at least helped by the availability of good, healthy food on the move.

A few years ago I wrote an article about the impact on sports people from the lack of nutritious food to eat whilst on long journeys. Athletes competing at natonal level can travel for hours every weekend to compete and the limited, cardboard-tasting options available at most garages and motorway services were usually packed full of fat and salt and grossly overpriced.

The same scenario is of course encountered by business people and professionals who take to their cars, trains and planes and cover long journeys for the work they do. I do this now.

The advice for a long time was simply to prepare in advance and take a packed lunch but it's not always possible, especially if you are away from home for more than a day or so.

I'm not a particularly loyal brand follower of supermarkets but I have been delighted to see they way in which M&S Simply Food have transformed the availability of good food on the move with their stores popping up at motorway services and railway stations across the country. Their range of healthy options available is staggering; not just the sandwiches, but a variety of pasta salads, cous cous, fruit pots, yoghurts etc, all convenient travel food. I notice that Waitrose have followed suit and I must extend a huge compliment to Westmorland Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria for their amazing service station. Theirs is almost the kind of place you would go just for a day out!

I now look forward to my trips away and actually plan my routes and timings around M&S Simply Food outlets. A hotel-room picnic of their food is a million times better than "dinner for one" at a nearby restaurant. Thank you M&S.
