Kissing Frogs

Posted: 18th October 2010

You may have heard the story of The Frog Prince, one of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, about a handsome prince who has a wicked spell cast upon him that only the kiss of a princess can break.

A modern interpretation can be found in the saying "You have to kiss a few frogs before you find your Prince", a little hope for those unlucky in love. A female friend and I have been laughing about this concept of kissing frogs recently and we've been trying to define what we mean by a "frog" and not just in the romance stakes. There is a business metaphor in there too.

"Frogs" are also business ideas that you try. In business you need to kiss lots of frogs, you need to try lots of new things because you don't always know which ideas will make your business fly. In my business I'm constantly looking for new ideas to develop, new approaches to take, new ways of reaching new customers, new problems which require new solutions. At Hampson Solutions, we have kissed lots of frogs, but from them we've also uncovered a few princes.

I think the key question to ask is, When can you know for sure that a frog really is just a frog? That it will never become a prince. Sometimes an idea is almost right, it just needs a tweak or two to make it a success so I'd never throw away an idea at the first failure. But sometimes you have a project or an idea, that no matter what you throw at it, it doesn't work. That is when you need to have courage to put the idea down, or at least store it away somewhere, and move on to other things.

So in a nutshell: Kiss lots of frogs, some more than once, but if you are certain what you have is just a frog, stop kissing it!
